The second season of HBO's Westworld will premiere on April 22, which means it's time for a new breakthrough, and this afternoon, the network announced that one would come in an unorthodox manner. At 8PM ET / 5PM PT, the transmissions of all the HBO and Cinemax channels were simultaneously "turned off", transmitting a brief preview with images of the next episodes, while it was promised that the complete advance would arrive on Thursday, March 29 at 11:00 am ET / 8AM PT.
The clip is short, interspersed with digital noise and lines of computer code that will undoubtedly soon be analyzed by Reddit's rabid fan base. But the footage itself is intriguing. There are glimpses of heavily armed security forces, presumably Delos, Inc., who land on a mysterious beach; a photo of Bernard by Jeffrey Wright on a cliff, looking in confusion; and a shot from Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), walking with a determined step while firing her pistol without blinking. And underneath everything, Ed Harris as The Man in Black intoning, "They want a new place, hidden from God, a place where they could sin in peace, we had something else in mind completely."
The first season of Westworld ended with the hosts staging a robot uprising, with the help of the late Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins), and everything that has been revealed so far, the hosts are still very much in the attack. Judging by this brief breakthrough, however, it seems that Delos, Inc. will do everything possible to defend itself. Tomorrow's trailer can offer a better idea of how well the corporation can do in that fight.
