In recent days, users with Alexa-enabled devices have reported hearing strange and spontaneous laughter. Amazon responded to the chill in a statement to The Verge, saying: "We are aware of this and we are working to solve it."
As noted in media reports and at a time of trending on Twitter, Alexa laughs without being asked to wake up. The people on Twitter and Reddit reported that they thought he was a real person who laughed near them, which can scare when you're alone at home. Many responded to the cackling sounds by unplugging their Alexa-enabled devices.
The Twitter user @CaptHandlebar was one of the first to report experiencing this on February 22:

Since then, different people have noticed listening to laughter. Sometimes it does not show up or appears as a strange response to requests to turn off the lights.

Lying in bed about to fall asleep when Alexa in my Amazon Echo Dot lets out a very loud and spooky laugh … there is a good chance that I will be murdered tonight. Gavin Hightower (@GavinHightower) February 26, 2018

Many related laughter with a moment in 2001: an odyssey in space when HAL 9000 becomes evil and says: "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can not do that." Maybe it's a sign that having smart devices in our homes is another step towards a dark and dystopian future dominated by the lords of the robot. When does the sequel to Terminator come back?
