Journalists have written fascinating accounts of people who create online misinformation or "false news" from a group of Macedonian teenagers at the infamous Internet Research Agency, whose members were recently charged for trying to influence the 2016 elections. Fact-checking groups have circulated tips to detect false stories and have been associated with social networking platforms to mark them. Quizzes and games like Factitious will test your personal ability to detect misinformation. In general, the news industry of "false news" is quite saturated.
