The premium cable network Epix has announced plans to launch an independent and direct consumer video subscription service, much like HBO or Showtime. As part of the new service, it will offer movies and TV shows in 4K sometime this year, according to Variety.
Subscribers will be able to stream Ultra HD selections through Epix applications on selected devices. The first titles available will include films like Goldeneye, The Spy Who Loved Me, Star Trek Beyond and Transformers: The Last Knight, as well as the original Epix series Get Shorty.
The executive vice president and general manager of the network, Monty Sahran, says that Epix is the first US television network to offer Ultra HD through its applications and hinted that there could be support for HDR in the future. Other premium networks such as HBO have not yet updated their original programming to 4K.
