Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is testifying before the Energy and Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives today, after a grueling five-hour joint session before the Senate Judiciary and Commerce committees yesterday. In total, Zuckerberg will face questions from nearly 100 lawmakers, and many of those legislators have received thousands of dollars from the company that runs Zuckerberg.
In the last 12 years, Facebook has spent $ 7 million in campaign contributions. Historically, Facebook has donated a little more to Democrats than to Republicans, but in general, the platform's political footprint is small in Washington, DC in relation to its market capitalization, which is currently estimated at around $ 400 thousand. millions. That's not unusual for technology companies: Amazon spent $ 4 million on campaign contributions in 20 years, and has a market capitalization of almost $ 700 billion. (Note, however, that Alphabet, Inc., with a market capitalization just above that of Amazon, seems to be outstripping Facebook in DC by an order of magnitude).
According to data from the Center for Responsive Politics, since 2014, Facebook has contributed a total of $ 641,685 to the members of Congress that Zuckerberg faces this week. The main recipients of this money include Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Representative Anna Eshoo (D-CA).
Senators who received even larger campaign contributions from Facebook were not restrained
The amount of money received did not necessarily correlate with the hostility of the questions posed by lawmakers at the first Zuckerberg hearing. That said, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) made a somewhat strange comment about Facebook, saying: "Some have expressed shock, surprised that companies like Google and Facebook share user data with advertisers. These individuals stopped to wonder why Google and Facebook do not charge for access? Nothing in life is free. "Hatch has taken $ 15,200 from Facebook since 2014, the sixth largest amount in the combined committees.
But other senators who have received even larger campaign contributions from Facebook were not restrained. Cory Booker, who has received $ 44,025 from Facebook since 2014 (the largest amount), questioned Zuckerberg in the 2016 ProPublica research that showed that Facebook allowed advertisers to target race. Kamala Harris, who took the second largest amount ($ 30,990), questioned the CEO about why Facebook did not notify users in 2015 that Cambridge Analytica had misused its data, causing Zuckerberg to twist uncomfortably.
If the senators pulled their punches, it was partisan, when Republicans from small governments like Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) or Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) questioned the need for additional regulation. At one point, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) picked up a tablet and pointed to Facebook's "privacy" tab, blaming people for not properly reviewing their own settings. Wicker has received $ 10,000 from Facebook since 2014, Tillis has received $ 7,500, and Sullivan has received a whopping $ 2,500.
The contributions of the Facebook campaign to all the legislators who posed questions to Mark Zuckerberg this week are listed below. The list includes the members of the Senate Judicial and Commercial Committees and the Committee of the Chamber of Energy and Commerce are listed in full below, and date back to 2014.
