Apple has joined two automakers to offer introductory essays to its subscription music service. The associations could also help take a bite out of the Spotify subscription base at the same time.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said on Tuesday it will start a one-year promotion on May 1 that includes a six-month subscription to Apple Music for new users with each new model Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep or Ram equipped with Apple CarPlay. For those who have already subscribed to Apple Music, the promotion will instead cover three months of its subscription.
At the same time, Apple partnered with Volkswagen in Europe to offer similar tests starting in May on Volkswagen's new vehicles equipped with CarPlay, the automaker said.
At the beginning of last month, Apple reported 36 million users (only 30 million in the United States), compared to 70 million Spotify. Given its trajectory to eclipse the base of Spotify, Apple apparently seeks to attract new customers from different sources.
