In January, the popular Plex multimedia broadcast application announced a new virtual reality application that allowed users to watch movies and TV shows alone or together with friends in virtual reality. It was a great idea, although the compatibility was limited only to Google Daydream. Now, there's good news for Plex users with different VR headsets who want to be with their friends but not be with them: Plex brought their VR movie app to Gear VR courtesy of the Oculus store.
There are three environments in which you can watch movies, including a luxury apartment, a deep space scene known as "the vacuum" and a cinema drive-in: the first two are free, but the drive-in requires a Plex subscription Pass. Once you start a movie or program, the content occupies a large percentage of your visual field. Users can also point and click to play content, take videos to get a close-up view of the cover and place videos in the room to watch later. Plex VR supports 360 degree, 180 degree and 3D videos.
To use Plex VR with friends, you need a Plex Pass, but seeing it only in virtual reality is free. Currently, Plex allows Google Daydream users to invite four other friends to watch a movie with you, so the support is likely to be similar for Gear VR.
The Plex application for Gear VR (and finally Oculus Go) is now available, but the look together feature, which includes voice chat with friends, will not be available in the headphones for a few weeks.
