The Russian troll farm has been hit with its first big accusation. Today, special lawyer Robert Mueller exposed his criminal case against the Russian Internet Research Agency, alleging that the agency participated in a sustained campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election. It is a major change for the organization, which has escaped to a large extent to the retreat of the United States, and gives us the best look so far on how the campaign of Russian influence developed.
One of the most surprising lessons of the accusation is how seriously the Russians took their false identities. We could associate troll accounts with spam or strange images, but at least some of the accounts described by Mueller were backed by large-scale identity theft ….
