Snapchat introduces several new features this week, including the ability to make group video calls and a "Mentions" feature that allows users to tag friends in snapshots loaded in Stories. The mentions were rumored for the first time last month.
To tag a friend, simply start typing "@", spell the person's username and then tap the name you want to tag. People who see the tagged add-on can swipe up and add the person as a friend or see any public item they have published. The person who tags will be notified in the chat window that was mentioned in their story.
Tagging friends in short 24-hour snapshots is something that is already available in Instagram Stories, which marks a reversal of the flow that generally saw Facebook's Instagram raising Snapchat's features. Snap said the show is something "especially influential for influential people / celebrities." That's true, given that it will allow these users to easily tag a brand or company that they could promote with a click link for their followers.
The video chat function, meanwhile, will allow up to 16 friends to chat by video between them simultaneously. If you have more people who want to participate, up to 32 people can join a group voice chat. Snapchat initially introduced voice and video calls one by one in 2016 and said that users are making millions of calls on Snapchat every day.
To use the group video chat feature, enter an existing group chat that you already have or start a new group. Touch the video icon to start a live group video chat, or tap the phone icon for a voice call. Group members will receive a notification that they have been invited to a call. When they enter the video chat, they will receive an alert on their keyboard to inform them that they have joined. If you do not want to use your camera, you can deactivate it and join with only the voice. Users can also filter Snapchat's lenses on their faces, such as the mouth of the rainbow vomit of the time or the ears of the puppies.
As we have noted above, Instagram, owned by Facebook, has long provided Snapchat features, including the function of raising their stories, which reproduces photos and videos that last 24 hours. It is likely to continue, as the recent analysis of the Instagram code has also pointed to the potential functions of voice and video calls from within the application.
In recent months, Snapchat has added a mountain of new features in an attempt to attract more users, including: Map Explore; the Bitmoji luxury personalization; Giphy integration; and custom contact lenses. Snap says the new call and tagging features of the video group will be rolled out globally during the next week.
